a beautifully chopped soul sample.

high-art surgical lyricism.

gnarly ad-libs from one of the most essential DJs of the era.

Tragic Hero’s latest single, Priorities, showcases his growing versatility. Produced by the dynamic Wes Pendleton, who provided original samples, this ep introduces us to a new side of Tragic Hero. Previously, he experimented with various sounds, from minimalist beats and Drake-inspired soundscapes to futuristic, “Dark Twisted Fantasy”-like instrumentals with a touch of “Vultures.” He also demonstrated his lyrical prowess over slightly off-kilter beats, whether heavily distorted or subtly unconventional. In “Safer,” beautiful and ghostly flipped samples provide the backdrop for his eloquent delivery over a plush instrumental.

DJ Mykael V provides ad-libs, giving the perfect touch of “victory lap” energy.

SIV assists with sultry vocals that serve as the warm fireplace within the haunted mansion where this song is being palyed.

Historically, Tragic Hero’s music reflected a David-like Psalm mentality, offering a retrospective view that serves as a cautionary tale for the audience. He urges listeners to address their emotional and spiritual deficiencies in the present. However, this release presents a thematically distinct protagonist. While his journey's triumphant, victorious arc continues to unfold off-screen, we sense that he has emerged from a personal trial. He acknowledges past mistakes but also declares his current standing, emphasizing that his priorities now lie in his family and his faith.

Here’s “Pressure.”

Sounds like the end credits to a great thriller.

Priorities evoke the vibe of Tyler, the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost. The clever writing, the effortlessly cool, and the perfectly chopped sample from Wes Pendleton all contribute to this feeling. This extends beyond a mere fusion of styles, bringing together the sophistication of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) with the grittiness of rhymeslayer.

Allegedly, more music is on the horizon. I am excited to see what the future holds for these upcoming releases. Here’s to hoping for more.
